glovesI haven’t done as much knitting lately as I would like to… life and arthritic hands getting in the way. Since November, though, I have been working on a pair of gloves for my father based on the World War II pattern provided by the American Red Cross for knitters to provide gloves for soldiers serving ‘over there’.

With a limited power supply and an unlimited list of things I’ve got to get done, the posts I’ve planned for the next couple of days will have to be postponed.  I’ll try to get a couple of ‘cool stuff’ links for you, but don’t expect deep insights.

In case you’re wondering, while I’ve not been here writing ‘hot, fresh content’ for you, I have:

  • Made several local grocery stores and one craft store meet their bottom line
  • Cleaned out my dry goods cabinet in my kitchen
  • Researched and printed out a half dozen each cookie and fudge recipes
  • Realized I forgot several ingredients
  • Twice
  • Realized my candy thermometer has come up missing and call Husband in a panic
  • Forgot, despite spending oodles of money at the store, to buy anything suitable for a dinner
  • Had failed (flat, pancakey) gingersnaps for dinner.
  • Decided that despite being unsuitable for gift giving, they’re pretty good.

    Baked Cookies (Photo credit: FoodMayhem.com)

Provided a handy resting spot for a tired kitten’s head.

  • Decided that I have a big, complex post about the second amendment coming.
  • Did NOT re-write that beautiful 200 words of ‘the novel’ that got eaten by the ether yesterday.
  • Did NOT finish putting up all the laundry I was SURE I’d be done with yesterday.
  • Made one batch of absolutely glorious chocolate fudge.
  • Decided that was enough for one night.
  • Went back to playing Sims 3 and watching Doctor Who reruns

The Cat Came Back

Not Charlie Sheen. This kitten is a standin as my photo uploader wouldn’t work and I had to use stock.

Charlie Sheen is the cat who came back. Already. Our lovely little bundle of purr has decided that her favorite place to rest her head when I’m at home is on my lap, with her head and paws on the track pad of my laptop (which I keep switched off because I use a mouse instead.)

From that position she bats at my hands as I type. All. Day. Long. (I type a lot). So I put her gently on the floor. Her hind feet haven’t even fully hit the floor before she’s twisting in midair to jump back into my lap. I pass her to Overthinker or Husband. She politely accepts scritches from them, then makes her way back to me.

Smart Phones

Smart Phones as Swiss Army Knife

Smart phones are an amazing investment, and even if you’re down and out and broke, if you can find a phone and plan you can afford, buy one.  They are a lifeline, an entertainment center, and a business office in one.

Every now and then someone starts that old rant about the ‘Obamaphones’ again. Part of me wants to ask whether that is kind of like a homophone, except that it sounds like the President. The other part of me wants to start a pedantic rant about how, no, that particular entitlement far predates the 45th President of the United States. But that’s neither here nor there.

Building an Earthship

The Preston’s home on fire

Hunter and Samantha Preston lost their home and a dear friend in a fire at their home in June of 2012, in Fort Myers, Florida. They are newlyweds with a small child and couldn’t afford insurance, so they lost everything. Their goal is to rebuild their home as an ‘Earthship‘, a sustainable home. They formed a campaign on Indigogo, which you can read about here.

Unfortunately, their campaign has stalled out and they are still far from their goal with only a few weeks left. If they succeed, not only will they again have a family home, one that is sustainable and a wonderful model for the rest of us, but they also intend to use it as the headquarters for their non-profit business, SLIE (Sustainable Living and Interconnected Education) which will teach urban dwellers in their area about gaining better control of their food chain.

Well Appointed Kitchen

We’re not all made of money, but if we were, what would we have in our well-appointed kitchen? And who can we gift with these lovelies this year? I’ve provided lots of links to cool online stores with this article, but feel free to cruise Craigslist or thrift stores or garage sales, if that’s what your budget calls for, and if you’re lucky enough to have good local sources for these, by all means utilize them.
